Australasian Mortality Data Interest Group (AMDIG)
Background
In 2002, as part of the Queensland University of Technology's, School of Public Health 8th International Summer School Program, the National Centre for Health Information Research & Training (NCHIRT), (formerly the National Centre for Classification in Health - Brisbane) brought together experts in death certification, clinical auditing, mortality data processing and production, epidemiology and research to participate in a one-day workshop entitled “Understanding Mortality Data – Reaping the Rewards”.
During formal and informal discussions throughout the workshop, it became apparent to all workshop participants of a need to establish a forum to improve communication on contemporary issues around the collection, processing, dissemination and utilisation of mortality data.
In 2003 the Australasian Mortality Data Interest Group was established to provide a forum for the producers and users of Australian and New Zealand mortality statistics to meet and discuss issues relating to all aspects of mortality data. The main output event for the Group is the annual Mortality Data Workshop, "Understanding Mortality Data: Reaping the Rewards."
